India now educates more children in private schools than at any point on record. About 39% of all school students, close to 96 million children, learn in private schools, and most of those are low-fee schools founded by individual educators rather than institutions. In Telangana the share is around 64.7%, the highest of any state.

These are not corporate chains. They are schools a teacher started in a rented building and grew classroom by classroom, on reputation and the trust of local parents.
